Feeling All At Sea About My Weight & Eating Behaviours?

When I was stuck in dieting hell, the hardest thing for me to cope with was that all the solutions that were available were all focused on food.
 
I already thought about food too much and what I really wanted was to just forget about it, to only think about it as fuel for a healthy body.
 
But no matter where I looked for solutions, it always came back to “what I was or was not allowed to eat”.
 
I don’t know if you can relate, but whilst all the diets and eating plans on offer seemed to work for other people, I knew they wouldn’t work for me. God knows I’d tried them all, but none of them ever took away the desire for the “forbidden foods”.
 
I like fruit, I like toast and Vegemite, I like all vegetables, I like eggs, I like dairy, and I didn’t want to have to cut them out of my life.  
 
I was overweight and I’d been on and off the dieting wagon for 25 years after I had developed a behaviour of coping with life using food & beverages to soothe and manage my emotions and alleviate stress and tension during a difficult time in my early adult life.
 
I don’t know if you know what it’s like to be overweight, but it’s restricting in every way, especially in regards to clothes, they're tight and uncomfortable, unless you want to wear tents, which I didn't.
 
A bulky body is restrictive: it can be uncomfortable sitting, standing for long periods, even sleeping can be affected simply because there is too much bulk to be comfortable.
 
It’s mentally restrictive because there is no time that the bulky body and the trauma of food is not at the forefront of your thoughts. And being overweight is emotionally restrictive too. You have to develop a thick skin to be able to withstand the harsh comments, opinions & judgement's of others. It’s like the value of who you are is diminished simply because you don’t look like a model!  
 
So going on a rigid, restricting diet and/or exercise program is really just compounding the issue, wouldn’t you agree? Because that’s what diets, eating plans and intensive exercise programs are… more constriction on your mental, emotional and physical resources. They narrow down your focus to just those 2 things.

But great change doesn’t happen when you tighten down and restrict yourself more.
 
Great and lasting change only happens when you loosen up and allow yourself to enjoy your life.
