Do you have foods that completely trigger you?
You know, the ones where one’s too many and 100’s not enough, and you find yourself devouring them like an unstoppable eating machine?
I used to be caught on that perpetual wheel, bewildered and desperate to find a way out. If I asked myself once I asked myself 1000 times "Why can't I stop this? How do I break free?"
I asked everyone around me, searching for answers to those questions. And you know what I discovered? They had no idea! They all felt as powerless and bewildered as I did that what we wanted consciously, had no bearing on unconscious behaviours we had set in place.
What I discovered after my very long 25 year quest to resolve this problem was that the secret lies in allowing ourselves to outgrow those foods.
And out growing something leads to feeling indifferent to triggering foods which is where freedom lives.
Instead of seeing them as something irresistible, I learned to view them as just cakes, just chocolate, just another ordinary item and de-escalate their power over me.
For those of us with chronic weight problems, it's that mental pull that sets off a chain reaction we can't resist.
Having just a small piece often leads us down a path we don't want to go. And you and I both know that constant resistance doesn't work either as it’ll only exhausts us until we inevitably give in.
Sometimes I felt like a locust on a wheat field, not knowing how to break free from this destructive pattern. It wasn't just one food either—it affected me with all kinds of foods and even extended to alcohol with Fridays being a reason to indulge without restraint, thinking, "Yippee, I can have as much as I want!"
For years, I pondered what was happening and how I could regain control?
It took a long time to define how I wanted to feel about these trigger foods, you’d think I’d have known really early in the peace that I wanted to feel indifferent to them?
But for the longest time I literally wanted to have my cake and eat it too, I wanted to have that mad pleasure of them AND to stop after a sane serving serve.
But freedom came from cultivating a feeling of indifference to them, being able to shoulder shrug them when I saw them.
It was an exciting feeling the first time I realised that I was able to admire cakes and sugary treats like they were beautiful flowers, appreciating their color, form, texture, and aroma but knowing I didn’t want to eat them.
