How do you stop the quitters spiral?

We’ve all done it.  

We’ve all fallen off the wagon. 

There’s literally no shame in that. 

Yet, sometimes, it can take us into deep shame that leads us into the quitters spiral.  

When we fall off the wagon in such a drastic way that it leads to total abandonment of our goals, it’s not because we ate something we shouldn’t have, it starts with something far more meaningful to us and that’s what leads to the food and ultimately our quitters spiral.  

The quitters spiral happens when we break one of our own cardinal rules which discredit one of our deepest held beliefs about ourselves. 

Perhaps you have a core belief that:  

  • You must do everything perfectly all the time and you must never slipup or look foolish
     
  • That to avoid humiliation, you must be the most knowledgeable person on a particular subject, and you must constantly be reading and studying to prove your value
     
  • You have to get everything right and that to receive any form of negative feedback means you are a failure
     
  • Have to be completely independent to be proven a success and that you simply cannot take the credit for anything unless you do it all yourself.
     
  • You have to be able to do everything and do it fabulously . That you have to parent like you don’t have a job, work like you don’t have a family, exercise and eat healthy like you have all the time in the world and help everyone and do everything.  

 
When something happens that sends us into deep shame, that puts everything else in doubt and we fail to see the point of the struggle that we’ve been so gallantly applying ourselves too.   

At that point, we go blind to all that is great in our world, all the blessings, all that is still right and in order and the way it should be. We miss that the sun is still shining and will indeed come out again tomorrow.  

To pull ourselves out of the tail spin our mind and emotions are going into, we have to do 5 things. 

  1. Stop. To change what is happening in our mind and body we actually have to do the opposite of our natural instinct which means we have to: 

    a) Look up.  

    b) Close our eyes.  

    c) Exhale.  

    d) Stay still for a moment and let yourself come back to centre and re-orient yourself back to the present moment, because in your mind and body you’ve gone to an earlier time.  

  2. Reality Check: give yourself a thorough reality and sanity check. This means, thoroughly assess what’s happened, and what the consequences are going to be. They may well be catastrophic, but most likely, as you are now an adult living in the here and now, it’s far less dramatic. 
     
  3. Get yourself outside pronto! You need to be out in the open, away from walls and ceilings. Our mind cannot pull our nervous system back to the here and now if we remain caged inside.  

  4. Continue breathing and looking up at the heavens. Go through your sanity check again and make your plans to move forward. Ask for help. Smile (it helps tell your brain everything is ok). Coach yourself properly, the same as you would do if you were assisting your best friend through a crisis.   
  5. Reaffirm your destination goals, especially your weight loss and health goals. Now is the time for clean, light food, your body is struggling to metabolize all the hormones and adrenaline caused by the upset, allow that to pass through your system with lots of water. Keep breathing.  


Being human is not easy.  

Our emotional bookmarks from the past and the associated internal chatter and behaviours keep leading us down the same paths. But the good news is, we can change our direction and reach our goals when we allow ourselves to take many moments every day to be present and aware of what’s happening and then change course if necessary.
