This week I'm talking about how easy it is to change your health and fitness with just one small 2 min adjustment to how you think about exercise.
Well, it's another New Years Eve on the horizon and opportunity to make a New Years Resolution that you can stick to using the power of marginal gains.
We think that getting regular exercise that makes a difference to our health has to be big blocks of time spent at the gym several days a week.
I remember when I decided that that really didn't work for me - at all!
So I made my own rules up about how and what exercise I would focus on.
Lucky for me, I do love exercise, but I get bored easy and I really didn't like having to go to the gym. I needed something that would fit into my hectic life and make me happy.
So I came up with my two-minute rule. I know, two minutes is nothing right? And people often say to me, "Well, two minutes isn't going to make you skinny is it?!"
But I disagree.
When I decided on my 2 minute rule, I was still working at an office. I worked very long hours and I was tired when I got home and I didn't want to do exercise. So my rule was:
1. As soon as I got home, just put on workout gear
2. Put on ABBA (love that Dancing Queen!)
3. Set the timer
4. Grab my hula hoop
5. Dance around the house like a little nutty butty and do some hula hooping
The results?
Well, I did that for a year and improved not only my physical health, but my mental and emotional health as well. And not by a little, it was a lot!
Why?
How did 2 mins a day of dancing and hooping make such a difference to my health?
1. It was a looooot of fun!
2. That fun changed my mood, lifted my energy
3. It stopped me grazing at the end of a long crappy day
4. It always lead to more than just 2 mins, and I would end up doing a lot more exercise - but it was still exercise I liked and I had set up a process that gave me the variety that my body and I needed.
5. I slept better every night
6. Felt better every morning
7. That gave me a better outlook as I headed off to work
8. If it was a crappy day (as it often was) I had something fun to look forward to when I got home
9. I started dancing at work (yes, around the office, hey if you're happy and you know it...dance)
10. All of that improved my relationships because I was a happier person, so people enjoyed being around me more.
