Let’s be honest

May 24, 2024

Sometimes food is all we’ve got.
That tasty takeaway lunch, that chocolate, cake, caramel latte, the wine and cheese after work….sometimes that’s the only thing we’ve got for pleasure, the only thing we’ve got to look forward to. And there’s nothing wrong with that.

Things are challenging at the moment, cost of living is flying high and there’s never a good thing to read in the papers. We feel like there’s more pressures at work, in our relationships, with our kids, and not to mention long commutes and all of life’s admin that we need to attend to. It’s hard to find time for rest, let alone relaxation and genuine fun times isn’t it?

Sometimes food and alcohol feel like they’re our greatest friend, bringing us that little bit of comfort throughout our day.

But what if that friend is the kind of friend you’d be better off without?

The kind of friend who ultimately leaves you feeling worse, not better?

The kind of friend who is covertly eating away at your mental, emotional, and physical health, eating away at your relationships and even your finances?

The kind of friend that if you decided to stop seeing them, you know it would improve your life.

The problem is that you know it will feel uncomfortable, all break ups do, and yet you know that it’s the right thing to do for you. Because even though you’ll go through the withdrawals and you’re going to have to work through the discomfort of it, eventually, you’ll reach that place where you’re feeling the true benefit of their absence from your life.

It’s not that life changes or gets any easier when they’re gone, the same shit that was going on in the world will still be going on, and the cost of living will still be the same, but you’ve changed, it’s you who is different and somehow, the new you has new perspectives on what’s happening in and around your life. The new you feels stronger, more capable and confident handling the challenges and problems of your life.

Sometimes it’s hard to be honest with ourselves though, isn’t it?

The reality is we want things to change but we don’t want to change……or do we?

I think we really do want to change, we just don’t know how to do it.

I remember that’s how it was for me. I really did want to change but I just didn’t know how to overcome my own desires to stay the same. It’s very troubling to really want to change and at the same time, another, seemingly stronger part of me, stands stubborn in old habits and behaviours.

If that sounds like you, think about what it is that you really want to change, which 1, 2, or 3 things, that if you changed them, would have the greatest impact on your health and happiness?

Then just work on getting your head around the fact that it will take a good 6 months to bed down some actual changes that will have the kind of impact you’re looking for and start making a plan that will get you where you want to go, and begin moving forward.

If you start now, then you will be there before Christmas, in time for the summer, ready to take on the next New Year and, you’ll be able to decide on a more interesting and inspiring New Year’s resolution for 2025 because you’ll have already sorted out the health one.

  • What’s stopping you?
  • Don’t know how?
  • No time to work it out?
  • Is it a couple of big things or a bunch of little things that will make the biggest difference?
  • Are you blaming the wrong things or the right things?
  • Where is your focus?

Put aside the next 6 months, know it takes time, and just step into making your plan today, and getting started today.
