What’s the one thing that can propel us out of procrastination?

Do you procrastinate? 
 

Procrastinate means: to delay or postpone action, to put off doing something.  

A simple Google search will provide many reasons why we procrastinate.  

But from my experience, when it comes to starting a weight loss program, any program, even ones we create ourselves, we back away and procrastinate simply because of a wee little fear 

What that fear is, is different for each and every one of us but mostly they revolve around these: 

  • We don’t know what the options are 

  • We’re confused by the options we’re presented with 

  • We’ve tried all the options we’re presented with and they didn’t work for us 

  • We’re just shit scared that we’ll get our hopes up and be disappointed - again 


I know firsthand what it’s like to really really
really want to get going, and really really really need to get going and yet, still sit there like a deer in the headlights, and do absolutely nothing except put more food in my mouth.  

Whilst so much time can pass while we’re in that state, there’s rarely a minute that we’re not thinking about it and kicking ourselves for not getting going!  

This is what causes so much mental and emotion anguish and ultimately creates a very unhelpful cycle of fatigue and inactivity, compounding our procrastination 

So how do we break-free from this mental paralysis 

No amount of talking or reasoning will do it. No amount of logic, encouragement or admonishment will shift us from our stuck state and cause us to take action.  

The only thing that kicks starts our brain is inspiration. Inspiration is when you’re inspired from within.  

That means, something happens and the gates open in your mind and you see it, you see exactly what you have to do and it’s so damn clear that you suddenly don’t know why you didn’t see it before?  

Inspired ideas come fully prepared with the first step already clearly defined as to what you have to do.  

But we have to act on that inspiration and clearly defined first step quickly because if we don’t it can fade into the background like a dream from the night before.  

Action may simply be 

  • Talking to someone and expanding the idea 

  • Quickly making notes about what to do and when and doing the first thing right there and then 

  • Putting on your shoes and getting out the door 

  • Picking up the phone and making an appointment with someone who can help 

  • Cleaning out your kitchen cupboards
