Why Failure Doesn’t Happen Overnight (And Success Doesn’t Either)

Mar 14, 2025

It was only one degree of course.

That’s all.

The pilot didn’t notice it at first.

The passengers didn’t feel it.

And for a while, the plane looked like it was still heading exactly where it was supposed to go. But after an hour? That one-degree shift put them kilometres away from their intended destination and put them squarely on a collision course with a mountainside!

That’s how life is too, right?

We don’t wake up one day suddenly exhausted, off-track, or feeling stuck. It happens gradually—one small decision, one habit, one compromise at a time.

We tell ourselves we’ll start tomorrow, that we’re just too busy this week, and when things settle down, then we’ll get back to our health, our goals, our bigger vision.

Except life doesn’t settle down, does it….not really?

And before we know it, we’re wondering how we ended up on a collision course with the mountain!

I know this pattern because I lived it, not just once, but many many times, and each time I say I won’t let it happen again

For years, I put my own well being behind everything and everyone else. I wasn’t careless, I was just trying to get everything done so I could sit down and then relax.

But the to-do list simply never ends!

There are always new expectations to be met (to be fair though they were mostly self-imposed!), work and home were relentless, always trying to keep up, barely able to keep up let alone get ahead. And in the chaos, I let small personal things slide, believing I would get to them soon.

But “soon” never came.

After painting myself into yet another corner, on the verge of catastrophe, I had my epiphany, its little things every day that make the difference, 1% shifts, not life overhauls

Instead of going into panic mode and overhauling everything at once , I made micro-adjustments, tiny course corrections every day, that over time added up to significant change.

That’s how I got off track and that’s how I was going to get myself back on track.

So here’s my question to you:

What’s the 1% shift you’re going to make today?

💕 Find pleasure: Take a minute to sit outside?

💕 Calm your jets: Go for a walk around the block?

💕 Build strength: do 10 bicep curls?

💕 Regroup: have a nap at lunch time?

💕 Flush your body: drink water instead of one coffee?

💕 Save money and calories: make your lunch?

💕 Connect: sit and play with your children?

💕 Feel love: hug your partner?

That’s 8 little things, which if you mixed them up and did them all at least twice every week would have a compounding effect very quickly.

That’s how you get yourself back on course.
